Prototyping
Driving environments demand interfaces that perform across radically different lighting conditions — direct sunlight, tunnel transitions, and nighttime low-ambient settings. This redesign includes both a light and dark mode to address luminance adaptation: the light theme maintains legibility under bright daylight conditions, while the dark theme reduces glare and preserves night vision. AAA WCAG contrast standards were applied to both modes to ensure text and critical data remain readable at a glance, without requiring focused attention — a core principle of safe HMI design.

Visual Design and Branding:
SF Symbols were selected deliberately for their optical consistency, scalability across display densities, and driver familiarity — reducing cognitive load by leveraging iconography already embedded in the Apple ecosystem that Lexus RZ buyers are likely using daily. All interactive elements were built as reusable Figma components with variants, enabling rapid theming and scalable handoff.

Why Lexus RZ?
The RZ represents Lexus's pivot into fully electric, tech-forward vehicles — a platform where the cluster UI carries more weight than ever, replacing traditional analog gauges entirely. This made it an ideal canvas for exploring HMI design at the intersection of luxury brand identity and modern EV UX conventions.

Color Identity
Color as Identity
The cluster UI adapts to the owner's exterior paint color — the same color on their car becomes a live accent throughout the interface. This was built as a component-level theming system in Figma: the vehicle component carries multiple color variants, and those values cascade through the cluster automatically. It mirrors production token-based theming logic, is scalable without restructuring, and creates a small but meaningful moment of personalization — the interface feels like it was made for this driver, not a generic one.
